The Best of Our Spies
In the summer of 1944 SOE agent Nathalie Mercier disappears in the Pas-de-Calais while working with the French Resistance. Her husband Owen Quinn, an officer in Royal Navy intelligence, discovers that her work has been tied to the elaborate Allied deception surrounding D-Day and sets out across occupied France to find her.
Nathalie and Owen are fictional, but the novel is built around the documented deception operations that convinced German planners to expect a major Allied landing in the Pas-de-Calais rather than Normandy. Gerlis combines Operation Fortitude, resistance activity and the liberation of France with a personal search-and-rescue plot.
