Tales from the South China Seas

Tales from the South China Seas preserves the recollections of British residents of colonial South-East Asia, particularly Malaya, Singapore, Borneo and other territories connected by trade and administration around the South China Sea. Interviewees describe plantations, government service, travel, clubs, households and the distinctive social worlds created by European communities living among much larger Asian populations.

The memories also encompass war, occupation, nationalism and the rapid dismantling of empire after 1945. As in Allen's other oral histories, the speakers offer subjective testimony rather than a single verdict on colonial rule. Their accounts reveal everyday habits and assumptions that official records rarely capture, while also showing how dramatically the region changed during the twentieth century.
