After surviving the Battle of Sekigahara, Miyamoto Musashi rejects the expectation that a defeated samurai should die for his former allegiance. He becomes a masterless wanderer and travels towards Kyoto, arguing that unquestioning service to a lord has turned the warrior code into a system of waste and obedience. The novel presents his famous Kyoto conflict as both a struggle for survival and an argument over honour, authority and the purpose of martial skill under Tokugawa rule.
