Fiona’s apparent defection, the decisions made by senior officers and the careful manipulation of family relationships are shown as parts of a long-term plan whose success depended on Bernard remaining ignorant of its real design.
By shifting away from Bernard’s first-person viewpoint, Deighton reveals the cost of using private lives as operational assets. The novel completes the Hook, Line and Sinker trilogy while also revising events from Game, Set and Match, showing how a successful intelligence deception can damage the people it was meant to protect.
