Devon, in the 1640s. Simon Carey and Amias Hannaford grow up as close friends, but the conflict between Parliament and Charles I forces them to choose opposing sides. Simon joins the Parliamentary cavalry while Amias enters Royalist service, and the local quarrels of neighbours and families become part of a national war.
Campaigning turns political conviction into hunger, injury, separation and the possibility of meeting a friend as an enemy. Simon’s experience of the Parliamentary army and Cromwell’s cause is sympathetic without making war morally simple. The novel follows the cost of learning that loyalty to a principle can be genuine on both sides, while reconciliation may demand more courage than battle.
