Spain, 1809. The British army returns to the Peninsula after Corunna and attempts to rebuild confidence alongside Spanish allies. The 106th Foot is drawn into the battles of Medellín and Talavera, where enthusiasm for the cause cannot compensate for poor coordination and heavy losses.

William Hanley begins working as an exploring officer, moving between reconnaissance, politics and partisan warfare. At the same time, Hamish Williams follows rumours of the Heroine of Saragossa while revenge and resentment inside the regiment threaten him before the French do.
