After the treaty settlement, Thomas Blackstone is sent to enforce English claims in France, but paper rights mean little in a countryside controlled by lords, towns and armed bands with their own interests. His name attracts enemies, and the violence of occupation threatens his men and his family as much as any formal army.

Set around 1361, the novel concentrates on the unstable aftermath of Brétigny. It is less about one famous battle than about making conquest function: collecting obedience, surviving ambushes, negotiating with unreliable allies and dealing with mercenaries who have learned to live from war.
