Sayonara

Major Lloyd Gruver arrives in Japan convinced that American servicemen should not marry Japanese women. His certainty begins to collapse when his enlisted friend Joe Kelly defies military pressure to remain with his Japanese wife, and when Gruver himself falls in love with Hana-ogi, a celebrated performer whose career depends upon discipline and cultural tradition.

Set during the Korean War, the novel examines prejudice, military authority and the legal barriers facing interracial couples under the American occupation. Gruver's relationship forces him to choose between institutional expectations and personal loyalty, while the fates of those around him expose the severe human cost of denying such relationships legitimacy.
