Pride and Prejudice

Elizabeth Bennet meets the wealthy Fitzwilliam Darcy when he arrives in Hertfordshire with his friend Charles Bingley. Darcy’s reserve and Elizabeth’s quick judgement turn mutual interest into hostility, while Bingley’s attachment to Jane Bennet becomes vulnerable to class prejudice and family interference.

A rejected proposal and Darcy’s explanatory letter force Elizabeth to reconsider George Wickham, her own family and the assumptions she has made. The novel uses inheritance, reputation and marriage to test the difference between social performance and dependable character.
