Poland
Poland: A History surveys roughly a thousand years of Polish political and cultural development, from the medieval state through the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the partitions and nineteenth-century struggles for national survival to restored independence, the Second World War, communist rule and the re-emergence of a democratic Polish state. Zamoyski gives particular attention to institutions, religion, culture and Poland’s changing place between its larger neighbours.
The 2009 book is a substantially revised and updated successor to Zamoyski’s earlier The Polish Way rather than a simple reprint. Figures such as Stanisław August Poniatowski, Józef Piłsudski and Joseph Stalin appear within the long political narrative. It is nonfiction national history.
