Pincher Martin

Christopher Martin, an officer in the Royal Navy, is thrown into the North Atlantic when his ship is torpedoed during the Second World War. He reaches an isolated rock and begins constructing the routines of survival: finding water, searching for food, arranging signals and defending his mind against cold, exhaustion and the surrounding sea.

As Martin clings to the rock, memories of his life as an actor, officer and manipulator return in broken sequences. The physical struggle becomes inseparable from his refusal to surrender the identity he has built through appetite and domination. Golding gradually destabilises the apparent shipwreck narrative, turning the rock into a final arena in which Martin’s consciousness resists death and judgement.
