Odion and his younger sister Tutelo are captured when Yellowtail Village is attacked and its survivors are marched away. Their parents, War Chief Koracoo and Deputy Gonda, follow the raiders, believing they are pursuing an ordinary captive party.
The children have instead fallen into the hands of Gannajero, a feared trader who buys and sells captives between warring communities. As Odion tries to protect the other children, Koracoo and Gonda encounter signs of a mysterious Forest Spirit whose purpose remains uncertain, beginning a pursuit that tests family loyalty and the customs of war.
