Roman Empire, AD 381. Five years after a Roman governor murdered Gothic leaders at a banquet, the frontier settlement is still shaped by the war that followed and by the death of Emperor Valens at Adrianople. Peace has been proclaimed, but the murdered king’s brother has sworn to hunt the eight legionaries who carried out the killings.

Flavius Focalis survives an attempt on his life and races across the empire to warn former comrades. Each man has built a different life since the massacre, and none can escape responsibility for what happened. The pursuit becomes a military thriller about revenge, guilt and the fragile accommodation between Romans and Goths at the end of the Gothic War.
