Retired intelligence officer Tim Cranmer discovers that his former agent Larry Pettifer has disappeared with Cranmer's former lover and a large sum of money. The disappearance forces him to revisit the long partnership through which he controlled Larry as a double agent against the Soviet Union.
Cranmer follows the pair into the unstable post-Soviet Caucasus, where Larry has attached his private ideals to a nationalist struggle. The pursuit becomes a personal reckoning with ownership, jealousy and the consequences of using another person's convictions.
