Ninety-Three

Set in 1793, the novel follows the French Revolution at its most violent moment, when republican authority confronts royalist resistance in the Vendée. Hugo sets military pursuit, civil war and ideological conflict against the personal choices of Cimourdain, Gauvain and the Marquis de Lantenac.

The book is less a conventional battlefield novel than a study of revolutionary principle under pressure. It uses the Reign of Terror and the War in the Vendée to ask whether justice, mercy and political necessity can survive when both republicans and royalists believe history is demanding absolute loyalty.
