Never Call Retreat

In August 1863, the alternate Civil War reaches its final crisis. Robert E. Lee has failed to break Washington but still possesses an army capable of forcing a political settlement, while Ulysses S. Grant brings a newly organised Union force into Maryland. Both commanders must fight before exhaustion, casualties and collapsing public confidence remove their remaining options.

The concluding volume builds toward a prolonged clash along the Monocacy in an invented campaign shaped by real personalities and real strategic constraints. Lincoln struggles to preserve the political will to continue the war, Lee searches for a decisive victory and Grant attempts to exploit the Confederacy’s shrinking reserves. The trilogy closes by testing how far leadership and battlefield success could alter the Union’s fate.
