Beginning in 1800, the novel follows Theodosia Burr as her father Aaron Burr’s political career reaches the vice-presidency and then collapses after his duel with Alexander Hamilton. Her marriage to South Carolina planter Joseph Alston gives her a household of her own, but it does not loosen the intense emotional and intellectual bond that ties her to her father.

Theodosia is drawn through Burr’s western conspiracy, trial and exile while trying to preserve her marriage and private identity. Seton also imagines a romantic attachment to Meriwether Lewis before following Theodosia to the final voyage during the War of 1812 on which she disappeared, turning an unresolved historical mystery into the conclusion of a fictional biography.
