Mutiny on the Bounty

Portsmouth, 1787. Fourteen-year-old John Jacob Turnstile escapes punishment for theft by accepting service aboard HMS Bounty. As the ship sails for Tahiti to collect breadfruit plants, he learns naval discipline under Lieutenant William Bligh and observes the tensions created by a long voyage, harsh punishment, dangerous seas and the crew’s extended stay in the Pacific.

After Fletcher Christian leads the mutiny in April 1789, Turnstile remains with Bligh and the men cast adrift in the ship’s launch. Their open-boat journey across thousands of miles becomes the novel’s central ordeal, testing navigation, rationing and loyalty. Told by a fictional young witness, the book revisits the competing legends of Bligh and Christian while foregrounding the physical realities of eighteenth-century seafaring and survival.
