Maurice Hall grows up within the expectations of the English professional middle class and reaches Cambridge without language for his attraction to men. His relationship with Clive Durham gives him companionship and intellectual recognition, but Clive ultimately chooses marriage, respectability and a conventional public life.

Maurice seeks medical and psychological cures before meeting Alec Scudder, a gamekeeper whose class position makes their relationship doubly unacceptable. Written in 1913–14 and published posthumously in 1971, the novel rejects punishment and concealment by giving its central relationship a deliberately hopeful ending outside respectable Edwardian society.
