Herefordshire, 1643. Brilliana Harley remains at Brampton Bryan Castle while her Parliamentarian husband Sir Robert Harley is in London. As Royalist forces close around the estate, she organises supplies, fortifications and the defence of a household isolated within a predominantly Royalist county.
The novel is a romanticised treatment of Brilliana’s documented defence of the castle. It alters the chronology and gives the fictionalised marriage more direct dramatic presence than the historical record permits, but it retains the political divisions, domestic pressures and physical hardship described in Brilliana Harley’s surviving letters.
