March retells the American Civil War from the perspective of the absent father in Little Women, following him away from his family and into the moral violence of the Union war effort. A committed abolitionist, March serves as a chaplain and teacher while confronting slavery, military disorder, illness, guilt and the gap between principle and action. The novel places private marriage and reformist idealism inside the larger conflict over slavery, emancipation and the human cost of the war.
