Italy’s Sorrow

After Mussolini’s fall and Italy’s armistice, the country becomes a battlefield between German forces and the advancing Allies. During 1944–45, civilians face occupation, reprisals, bombing, hunger and civil conflict while the front moves slowly through mountains and fortified lines.

Holland follows soldiers on both sides alongside partisans, families and communities caught between Fascist and resistance violence. The campaign’s strategic significance is measured against its human consequences. Liberation does not arrive as a single event but as a prolonged process in which military advance, political revenge and social collapse overlap.
