Lillian is dying of tuberculosis in an Alpine sanatorium when she decides that waiting safely for death is no longer a form of living. She leaves with Clerfayt, a professional racing driver accustomed to risk, and travels through post-war Europe in search of movement, pleasure and freedom from the routines of illness.
Their relationship joins two different attitudes towards mortality: Lillian knows that her time is limited, while Clerfayt repeatedly treats danger as part of his profession. The novel is a literary romance about illness, speed and the attempt to live in the present when neither love nor survival can be guaranteed.
