Hard Times

In the industrial town of Coketown, Thomas Gradgrind raises his children Louisa and Tom according to a philosophy of facts, calculation and self-interest. Louisa is pushed into a loveless marriage with the wealthy factory owner Josiah Bounderby, while Tom’s resentment and irresponsibility place the family in danger. The circus performer Sissy Jupe, dismissed by Gradgrind’s educational system as impractical, preserves the sympathy and imagination that his household lacks.

The novel sets these lives beside those of factory workers such as Stephen Blackpool, whose poverty and moral decency expose the failures of both employers and institutions. Dickens uses Coketown to attack utilitarian education, industrial exploitation and the reduction of human experience to statistics, while arguing for affection, imagination and social responsibility.
