Italy, AD 312. Constantine crosses the Alps with a smaller northern army and drives into territory held by Maxentius. Victories increase his momentum but stretch his forces, while religious divisions and the prospect of revolt threaten unity before he can reach Rome.
Maxentius attempts to secure a restless capital and make use of the walls, resources and political symbolism of the old imperial city. Their rivalry ends at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, where military decisions become inseparable from signs, faith and later propaganda. One contender will die and the other will claim not only victory but divine approval for a new imperial settlement.
