Caesarius recalls the life of his friend Julian, the surviving cousin of Emperor Constantius II, whose education in philosophy and Christianity gives way to military command on Rome’s threatened Rhine frontier. Julian proves unexpectedly effective against Germanic invaders and becomes the focus of soldiers and officials dissatisfied with Constantius’s suspicious and increasingly isolated rule.
After being proclaimed emperor, Julian openly rejects Christianity and attempts to restore Rome’s traditional cults while preparing an ambitious invasion of the Sasanian Empire. The novel traces his transformation from watched imperial relative to soldier, rival emperor and religious reformer, ending with the Persian campaign that destroyed his plans and changed the direction of the later Roman Empire. Some editions style the title as Gods & Legions.
