From Dachau to D-Day

by Helen Fry

4.3(245)

From Dachau to D-Day tells the life of Willy Field, born Willy Hirschfeld in Bonn. Arrested after Kristallnacht, he survived imprisonment in Dachau and escaped Germany for Britain, only to be interned as an enemy alien after war began. He was transported to Australia aboard the Dunera before volunteering for British military service and returning to Britain.

Field eventually transferred from the Pioneer Corps to the Royal Armoured Corps and landed in Normandy shortly after D-Day. Helen Fry follows his fighting through France, Belgium, the Netherlands and into Germany, using his experience to show the reversal by which a persecuted German Jew became a British soldier confronting Nazi forces. The book is a documented biography and memoir-based history, not a novel.
