Autumn 1944 finds Major Tulloch and the Lothian Rifles in the Netherlands with the 51st Highland Division. As they advance through forests, fortifications, and stiff resistance, a new arrival joins the battalion. Fluent in German, Captain Lennox is fearless under fire and under suspicion by the Intelligence. But is he a spy, a broken man courting death, or the key to their success?

With the Germans preparing for their last stand, Tulloch must rely on experience, instinct and hard-earned loyalty, as the final battles of the war test everything he believes in. The principal historical frame is Liberation of the Netherlands and Rhine Campaign. The military action is linked to the operational history of the Second World War, but the central concern is how repeated defeat, recovery and command responsibility alter a regiment and its officers.
