In 1849 Flashman escapes New Orleans by joining Susie Willinck’s wagon train to California. Cholera, Comanche attack and the loss of their guide leave him responsible for travellers he plans to abandon. After reaching Santa Fe he falls among scalp hunters, survives an Apache reprisal and enters the family of Mangas Coloradas, meeting Geronimo and Kit Carson before escaping towards the California Gold Rush.

The second narrative resumes in 1875, when Flashman returns to the United States and is drawn towards George Armstrong Custer’s expedition. Kidnapped onto the northern plains, he witnesses the Battle of the Little Bighorn from within the Lakota and Cheyenne victory and confronts consequences of his earlier exploitation. The two periods connect westward migration, Indigenous resistance and the violence behind frontier legend.
