Europe in 1945 is no longer at war but has not yet settled into peace. Richard Prince and Danish agent Hanne Jakobsen are sent after a Nazi war criminal connected with the deaths of British agents, and their pursuit uncovers a clandestine escape route supported by British sympathisers and complicated by competing Allied interests.
The trail eventually raises the possibility that Martin Bormann, Hitler’s powerful Party Chancellery chief, may have survived Berlin. Bormann’s office, disappearance and later uncertainty about his fate belong to the historical record, while the escape network and Prince’s pursuit are fictional. The novel closes the Richard Prince quartet in the unstable aftermath of Nazi defeat.
