Emily
Beginning in 1910, Emily Paget, the poor relation of an earl, rejects a respectable marriage and insists upon earning her own living. Her eccentric Russian grandmother takes her to St Petersburg, where Emily finds intellectual freedom among fashionable radicals and falls passionately in love. The drawing-room talk of revolution seems exciting rather than dangerous until war and political collapse make it real.
The First World War and the Russian Revolution destroy the Kirov world of privilege and security. Emily’s courage is tested as she tries to save the surviving members of her family and escape a country descending into violence. To carry them to safety, she must leave behind the man she loves without knowing whether he has survived, bringing the trilogy’s century of Russian history to a tragic conclusion.
