South Africa, 1871. Jack Lark and Anna Baker travel to the Cape Colony diamond fields hoping that a successful claim can finance the independent life they have fought to build together. The diggings draw fortune seekers from across the region, and competition quickly turns violent as rival prospectors and armed Boer men contest access to the same ground.
The novel is set during the Kimberley diamond rush, when discoveries transformed an improvised frontier of individual claims into one of the most important mining centres in southern Africa. Jack enters the fields looking for wealth rather than war, only to find that greed, lawlessness and survival can produce dangers as unforgiving as any battlefield.
