During the Second World War, mathematician Lawrence Waterhouse works with Allied codebreakers while Marine Bobby Shaftoe joins a secret unit designed to conceal the fact that Enigma has been broken. Their operations move through Bletchley Park, the Atlantic and the Pacific as cryptography, deception and hidden Axis gold become inseparable.
In the late twentieth century, their descendants build a data haven in the fictional state of Kinakuta and uncover the unresolved financial consequences of the wartime story.
