Company of Cowards

During the American Civil War, Union captain Jared Heath refuses an order that would sacrifice his company for no military purpose. Court-martialled and stripped of rank, he is placed in command of Company Q, an improvised unit made up of eight officers condemned as cowards. The men carry different burdens of fear, failure and disgrace, and Heath must turn them into a functioning company while deciding whether courage means obedience or responsibility for the lives under his command.

Their second chance takes them west into Comanche country, where isolation and danger force the officers to rely on one another. Schaefer uses the military adventure to question easy labels of heroism and cowardice, showing how reputation can conceal moral courage as readily as it can disguise panic. The novel joins a Civil War redemption story to the violent expansion of the postwar frontier.
