In the closing years of Japan’s Sengoku period, thirteen-year-old Bennosuke lives apart from the other children of his village. His mother is dead, his celebrated father Munisai Shinmen has spent years serving distant lords, and his uncle Dorinbo has tried to guide him towards scholarship and restraint. When Munisai returns wounded and pursued by enemies, Bennosuke is drawn into the feud surrounding his family and the warrior inheritance he has idealised.

Training, betrayal and personal loss force Bennosuke to decide whether honour requires obedience, vengeance or independent judgement. His path leads to the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, where rival coalitions fight for control of Japan and the defeated young warrior begins to assume the name Miyamoto Musashi. The novel uses the uncertain record of Musashi’s youth to portray the formation of a swordsman who will challenge the values of the samurai world.
