Bugles and a Tiger
John Masters begins his autobiography with Sandhurst in the 1930s and his return to India as a young officer of the 4th Gurkha Rifles. He describes learning the regiment’s languages, customs and expectations while adapting to garrison life and the demanding relationship between British officers and Gurkha soldiers.
The memoir then moves onto the North-West Frontier, where patrols, tribal warfare and the Waziristan campaigns test the assumptions of a newly commissioned officer. Written after the end of the Raj, the book combines military detail with a candid account of the habits, loyalties and contradictions of the Indian Army on the eve of the Second World War.
