Mixtli, called Dark Cloud, dictates the history of his life to Spanish clerics after the conquest of Mexico. Born near the lakes of the Basin of Mexico, he moves through schooling, trade, war, court service and long journeys that reveal the social worlds of commoners, merchants, warriors, priests and rulers. His rise brings him into the imperial capital of Tenochtitlan during the reigns of Ahuitzotl and Moctezuma II, while family loyalties and private losses remain entwined with the demands of empire.

The arrival of Hernán Cortés, La Malinche and their Indigenous allies turns Mixtli’s personal testimony into an account of political collapse. He witnesses the seizure and death of Moctezuma, the rule of Cuitláhuac and Cuauhtémoc, epidemic disease and the siege that destroys Tenochtitlan in 1521. The framing narrative places his memories under colonial scrutiny, contrasting the civilisation he describes with the assumptions of the officials recording it.
