A Study in Scarlet

London, 1881. Dr John Watson returns from army service in the Second Anglo-Afghan War with his health damaged and his finances reduced. Sharing rooms at 221B Baker Street introduces him to Sherlock Holmes, an eccentric consulting detective whose experiments in chemistry and close reading of physical evidence are tested when Enoch Drebber is found dead in an empty Brixton house, with the German word RACHE written in blood on the wall. Scotland Yard inspectors Lestrade and Gregson pursue competing theories while Holmes reconstructs the movements and motive of the killer.

The explanation shifts the narrative to the Mormon migration into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. John Ferrier and his adopted daughter Lucy are absorbed into the settlement governed by Brigham Young, but conflict over Lucy’s forced marriage destroys the family and gives Jefferson Hope a reason to pursue vengeance across America and Europe. The novel introduces Holmes and Watson while joining a Victorian London murder investigation to a frontier narrative about migration, religious authority and revenge.
