Tim Hodkinson

1971

Tim Hodkinson writes Viking and early medieval fiction shaped by seafaring, frontier conflict, Norse belief and the clash between emerging states.

Tim Hodkinson was born in Northern Ireland in 1971. He studied medieval English and Old Norse literature, together with medieval European history, giving him a strong foundation in the languages, stories and political structures of the early Middle Ages. He has lived in both Ireland and the United States and has worked across teaching and other professions while developing his fiction. His writing draws particularly on saga traditions and on the unstable cultural boundaries between Scandinavian, Irish and Anglo-Saxon societies.

Hodkinson is best known for the Whale Road Chronicles, which follow warriors, sailors and displaced nobles through the Viking world of the ninth century. The series ranges across Britain, Ireland and continental Europe, combining raids and naval journeys with dynastic struggle and religious change. The Sword of the War God turns to the fifth century and the movements of peoples around the declining western Roman world, showing his interest in periods where established authority is breaking apart. Hodkinson’s novels are particularly suited to readers interested in Norse culture, early medieval Ireland and campaign stories that cross several regions rather than remaining within a single kingdom.
