Jean Plaidy was the best-known pen name of British author Eleanor Hibbert, a prolific writer of historical fiction, romance and suspense. Born in London in 1906, she developed a strong interest in history and went on to produce novels set across a wide range of periods, from medieval England and the Tudor court to revolutionary France and imperial Russia. Her books often centre on monarchs, royal marriages and dynastic conflict, presenting complex historical events through accessible, character-driven narratives.
Writing under several names, including Victoria Holt and Philippa Carr, Hibbert published more than 200 novels during her career. As Jean Plaidy, she became particularly associated with long-running series about European royal families, including the Tudors, the Plantagenets and the Georgian monarchy. Her combination of historical research, political intrigue and personal drama made her one of the most widely read historical novelists of the twentieth century.
