Ian F. W. Beckett is a British military historian specialising in the history of the British Army, citizen soldiers and the First World War. He formerly taught at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and held professorial posts in Britain and the United States before becoming Professor of Military History at the University of Kent. After retiring from teaching in 2015, he remained associated with Kent as an honorary professor. Beckett is also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and served for many years as chairman of the Army Records Society.

Beckett writes non-fiction rather than historical novels. His major works include The Great War, 1914–1918, The Making of the First World War, Ypres: The First Battle, 1914, Britain’s Part-Time Soldiers, A Guide to British Military History and A British Profession of Arms. In The British Army: A New Short History, he traces the army’s development from the seventeenth century to the modern era, examining its campaigns alongside recruitment, professionalism, civil–military relations and its place within British society. He has also edited or contributed to studies of the territorial army, imperial forces, counter-insurgency, guerrilla warfare and the social composition of Britain’s armed forces.
