Harry Sidebottom

Harry Sidebottom was raised in Newmarket and studied ancient history at Lancaster University before completing postgraduate research at Manchester and Oxford. He became an academic specialising in the ancient world and has taught classical history at several universities. His scholarly work includes studies of warfare, culture and the ways later societies have represented Greece and Rome, giving his fiction a firm foundation in both literary evidence and modern historical debate.

Sidebottom began the Warrior of Rome series with Fire in the East, published in 2008. The novels follow Marcus Clodius Ballista through frontier wars, sieges and political crises during the turbulent third century AD. He later wrote the Throne of the Caesars sequence and other Roman historical novels. Rather than relying only on emperors and famous battles, Sidebottom pays close attention to logistics, fortifications, religious practice and the uncertainties created by incomplete evidence. His academic background is most visible in the texture of military and civic life, while the plots remain driven by danger, ambition and divided loyalty. He is particularly useful for readers interested in Rome’s eastern frontier and the Crisis of the Third Century.
