Emily Hauser is a British classicist, ancient historian and author whose work recovers women’s perspectives from Greek mythology and classical literature. Born in Brighton and raised in Suffolk, she studied Classics at the University of Cambridge, completed a doctorate at Yale University and held a Junior Fellowship at Harvard. She is a Senior Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter, where her academic research focuses on ancient poetry, gender and the representation of women’s voices. Her nonfiction includes How Women Became Poets and Mythica: A New History of Homer’s World, Through the Women Written Out of It.
Hauser’s historical and mythological fiction is represented by the Golden Apple trilogy. For the Most Beautiful retells the Trojan War through Briseis and Chryseis, women largely marginalised in Homer’s Iliad. For the Winner reimagines Atalanta’s involvement in the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts, while For the Immortal centres on the Amazon queen Hippolyta and her encounter with Hercules. Across the trilogy, Hauser combines classical scholarship with accessible storytelling, shifting attention away from celebrated male heroes to women whose lives were shaped by war, enslavement, rivalry and divine intervention.
