Diana Gabaldon

1952

Diana Gabaldon writes historical fiction with romance, time travel and family saga elements across eighteenth-century Scotland, America and beyond.

Diana Gabaldon was born in Arizona in 1952. She trained as a scientist, earning degrees in zoology and marine biology before completing a doctorate in behavioural ecology. She later taught at university level and worked in scientific computing and technical writing. Her combination of research skills and wide-ranging curiosity became important when she began writing fiction, initially as an exercise to learn how a novel worked.

That experiment became Outlander, published in 1991, in which twentieth-century nurse Claire Randall is transported to eighteenth-century Scotland and becomes entangled with Highland politics, clan society and Jacobite resistance. The series grew into a long family saga spanning Scotland, France, the Caribbean and colonial North America. Gabaldon also created the Lord John novels, which blend military history, espionage and mystery. Her work combines romance and adventure with medical detail, domestic life and the consequences of political rebellion. The time-travel framework allows modern assumptions to be tested against the social and legal realities of the past, making the books particularly relevant to readers interested in Jacobite Scotland, the Seven Years’ War and the American Revolutionary era.
