Alison Weir writes both historical fiction and history with a strong focus on royal women, Tudor politics and dynastic conflict.

Alison Weir was born in Westminster in 1951 and developed an early fascination with Tudor history after encountering the story of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon as a teenager. Before writing full time, she worked in several occupations, including teaching and the civil service, while continuing independent historical research. Her first major published work, Britain’s Royal Families, appeared in 1989 and established the genealogical and archival interests that would remain central to her career.

Weir has written extensively about English monarchs, royal marriages and women whose political influence was often exercised through family, inheritance and the court. Her nonfiction includes studies of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Elizabeth of York, Mary Queen of Scots and the wives and children of Henry VIII. She later developed a parallel career as a historical novelist, producing works such as Innocent Traitor, The Marriage Game and the six-volume Six Tudor Queens sequence. Her fiction is closely connected to her biographical research but uses imagined interior lives and domestic detail to explore motives that documentary evidence cannot fully recover. She is particularly useful for readers interested in medieval and Tudor queenship, dynastic succession, court politics and the restricted choices available to elite women.
