Period

Republican China

1912–1949 CE

The Republic of China was proclaimed after the 1911 Revolution ended more than two millennia of imperial government. The new state inherited severe fiscal weakness, regional military power and foreign privileges in treaty ports. After Yuan Shikai’s failed attempt to restore monarchy and his death in 1916, much of the country fragmented among competing military governments.

The Nationalist movement later established a central government at Nanjing, while the Chinese Communist movement built alternative networks of political and military power. Urban modernisation, student activism, commercial growth and new education existed beside rural poverty, landlordism, civil conflict and repeated foreign intervention. Japanese invasion after 1937 interrupted but did not end the struggle between Nationalists and Communists.

This context supports fiction about Chinese families crossing the end of empire, warlord politics, revolutionary movements and the social changes of the early twentieth century. Pearl S. Buck’s The Good Earth Trilogy, East Wind: West Wind and Pavilion of Women place domestic and generational conflict inside this unstable transition.
