The Severan Dynasty began with Septimius Severus after the civil wars of AD 193 and continued through rulers including Caracalla, Elagabalus, and Severus Alexander. The dynasty relied heavily on military support and expanded the role of the army in imperial politics. It also saw legal, financial, and social changes, including Caracalla’s grant of citizenship to free inhabitants of the empire.
